I received notification late yesterday from Council for Christian Colleges and Universities President, Shirley Hoogstra, that they were releasing a public statement relative to the association’s membership requirements in the matter of human sexuality and same sex marriage. The institutions–Eastern Mennonite University and Goshen College–whose relaxation of employment policies prompted this “expedited listening period” among CCCU presidents, voluntarily withdrew their CCCU membership prior to the conclusion of the process. The process, nevertheless, brought into focus significant ambiguity in CCCU’s member and affiliate category distinctions. Accordingly, CCCU has appointed a task force to review all member and affiliate category definitions and recommend appropriate clarifications and refinements. ABHE member president, Gary Nelson of Tyndale University College & Seminary (ON) was appointed to the task force, which will be chaired by Biola’s Barry Corey and Wheaton’s Phil Ryken. I was invited to sit in on an “insider” teleconference during which there was an opportunity for questions and comments, of which there were few. Stay tuned–and in prayer–for further developments.
