Supplemental Review

A Supplemental Review is a mid-cycle check-in conducted through a Supplemental Evaluation Visit by a Commission staff representative. In plain language, it is ABHE’s way of verifying that an institution’s reported progress is real, documented, and moving in the right direction between major review cycles. It is not a full reaffirmation review, but it is more than a routine update.

When it may occur

Supplemental review typically occurs in Year 3 after initial accreditation, about two years before the five-year reaffirmation Evaluation Team Visit. Its purpose is to verify progress during the accreditation period rather than waiting until the full reaffirmation review. It is a visit from a Commission Staff Representative used to address any remaining concerns from the most recent action letter, orient newer institutional leaders, and help the institution prepare for the next self-study and reaffirmation visit.

What the institution should be prepared to demonstrate

Institutions should be ready to demonstrate progress since the last review, the evidence behind reported improvements, updated data, and a candid understanding of current operations. In practice, that means being prepared to discuss any concerns from the most recent action letter, review the institution’s Standards Self-Assessment, show how improvements have been implemented, and talk openly about what still needs attention before reaffirmation.

How it differs from a comprehensive review

A supplemental review is narrower than a comprehensive review. A comprehensive review involves a full self-study, review of compliance with all institutional standards, a multi-member peer evaluation team, and Commission action tied to candidate status, initial accreditation, or reaffirmation. Supplemental review, by contrast, is a staff-led mid-cycle verification visit focused on reported progress and readiness for the next major review.
