Annual Institutional Update

Annual Institutional Update (AIU)

The Annual Institutional Update (AIU) is ABHE’s annual reporting process for gathering institutional data used for monitoring, research, and benchmarking. It helps the Commission stay current on each institution’s profile, operations, student outcomes, faculty data, and financial condition so that ongoing accreditation oversight is based on timely, accurate information rather than on major review cycles only.

Key AIU Due Dates

Due Date What is Due
September 15 Accreditation Directory Profile updates
November 15 Annual Institutional Update (AIU) statistical information
December 15 Financial audit and management letter/ financial data

What institutions typically submit

Institutions typically submit updated profile information, statistical data, and financial information, including the annual audit and related management letter. Other items include signed Tenets of Faith affirmation, catalogs, or other requested explanations and documentation.

How ABHE uses the data

ABHE uses AIU data to monitor educational quality, financial stability, student achievement, faculty qualifications, and profile accuracy. This includes reviewing whether institutional profile information is current, whether approved programs and locations are reported correctly, and whether submitted data indicate concerns related to enrollment, retention, graduation/transfer-out rates, faculty credentialing, financial responsibility, audit findings, or internal controls.

What happens if data raise concerns

When AIU data falls outside expected ranges or raises questions, ABHE may request an explanation and place the matter before the appropriate committee for review. Depending on the situation, follow-up may include a committee review, progress report, staff visit, or focused review. If concerns persist over time, the issue may affect the institution’s accreditation standing and can lead to heightened monitoring or formal action.
